International Circulation: Will you please talk about proximal protection for carotid stenting.

Prof. Gary M. Ansel:  Proximal protection is somewhat of a much newer protection device that allows us to do two things.  Firstly， it allows us to use our typical equipment that we would use， including a wire of our choice but it also allows us to cross the blockage after we are protection the patient.  So what this entails is putting a little balloon up into the external carotid， a catheter into the common carotid with a balloon around it， and inflates both of those balloons which actually either reverses flow or shuts down flow in just that internal carotid area.  Then we do the procedure and actually aspirate out any of the debris.  We are just now seeing the results from the EMPIRE trial which is very promising.  In about a month at VIVA we will be showing the ARMOR trial which will be release at that time too.
